Needle phobias can be very challenging especially if you need to have a course of injections as was the case when a delightful 13-year-old boy came to me and who was extremely afraid of needles.
From my experience I have learnt that phobias and fears do have a rational source and therefore, I pay exquisite attention the minute aspects of how the person has coded their symptom information. In this case when I asked him what made him afraid of needles, I found out that he was not frightened of it being painful when he got the injection rather that he was afraid that the needle would break off inside him.
He was extremely anxious that once broken off the needle would travel to his heart and kill him. Luckily, he came to see me at a GP’s practice where I had access to needles and so when showed him that it was virtually impossible to break the needle, he was able to relax for the hypnosis. He went on to have the who course of treatment without any further problems sit the needle phobia.
