Hypnosis

Hypnosis, simply put, is a naturally occurring mental state that gives us the ability to change a behaviour through a conditioned response. It can be used to (a) change a behaviour that is problematic for us or to (b) enhance a behaviour that we want to perfect.

Almost every person and animal have the ability to access a hypnotic state, we enter different hypnotic states throughout the day and for most part we will not notice moving through them.  Most of our behaviours are learnt through conditioning and have now run unconsciously outside our awareness.  For the most part there isn’t an issue but when we want to change a behaviour it may be problematic. This is where hypnosis comes into its element.

Hypnosis allows us to direct our attention in a safe and deliberate way. During hypnosis your body releases powerful neuro-chemicals which helps us to enter one of two specific hypnotic states depending on what we are wanting to create.

  • Focused or Up-Beat Hypnosis

Where you are fully alert and focused, almost like being in a hyperexcited “buzz” state. This is useful in when doing more energetic activities to get you in the “zone” such as, writing an essay, running a race, dancing, fighting, etc. Therapist rarely use this one as it is much more outward focused and less likely to be receptive to therapeutic suggestions. However, most body coaches or instructors will utilise this form of hypnosis.

  • Relaxed or Down-Beat Hypnosis

Where you are in a relaxed or mellow state like just before falling asleep, reading a book or calmly watching the world go by.  Most hypnotherapists use this form of hypnosis because it activates a brain state where you can easily bypass your critical thought patterns.  When you can see things clearly in a relaxed and safe way it becomes much easier to deal directly with issues or problems, without your internal critical voice jeopardizing the work.
