Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) occurs when a traumatic event is not resolved properly and the person literally ‘re-lives’ that trauma over and over again. This can be very debilitating for a person to experience

EMDR is a technique that can help to ‘free up’ the nervous system so that the brain can begin to reprocess those traumatic experience in a natural way.  It taps into the rapid eye movements (REM) state that we experience in our sleep. This is a state in which our daily events are process in a safe way.

There are two process that EMDR utilises

  1. The desensitisation to the intensely strong feelings the person experiences
  2. Creating a bridge between mind and body so that thoughts and feelings begin to work together. This allows for the integration of new updated cognitions back into that traumatic memory. So, the person’s memory of the traumatic event is still there but the person is no longer affected by it.

When you come for and EMDR session you will find it a very structured process. I will sit in front of you and ask you to follow my hand movements with your eyes. This can a little challenging at first but people generally get used to working this way very quickly. I would ask if you have contacts to remove them prior to the session.

Treatments for most problems range between 4-6 weekly sessions although some problems may require longer than this scheduling. After six sessions, we will evaluate how you are doing and discuss how to go forward for future treatments.

EMDR has been shown to be particularly useful in treating:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Phobias
  •  Flashbacks

Testimonial:

Working with Sherine was a positive experience. She was wise and knowledgeable, and generous in sharing with her knowledge, as well as considerate and reliable. I found that we quickly created a safe and supportive relationship from which to explore. Her humanity and compassion shone throughout.

I felt better after a course of EMDR with her, more in the present and connected to myself, as well as more forgiving, rather than being bogged down by remembering upsetting past events, having unwanted thoughts and self-blaming. I recommend her without reserve – Mary-Claire Wilson

“After going through several very traumatic events I reached out to Sherine. I was in crisis and Sherine helped me navigate it and and come out the other end repaired. We did EMDR therapy and I learned a ton about myself and was able to heal through the process. I am very grateful that I found Sherine and would highly recommend her.” – Ethan Gill
